PURPOSE:A gas discharge emission element capable of emitting blue light with a high emission efficiency, comprising a gas having a discharge spectrum in a specific wavelength region, a chloroborate fluorescent substance, and discharge electrodes in a container. CONSTITUTION:A gas discharge emission element comprising (A) an individual gas, e.g. argon, krypton, or xenon, having a discharge radiation spectrum in a wavelength region shorter than 200nm, or their mixture, (B) the chloroborate fluorescent substance 25 of the formula (MII is an element selected from Be, Mg, Zn, Sn and Pb; MIII is an element selected from Al, Ga, In, Tl, and Bi; 0<=X<=0.7; 0.001<=Y<=0.5; 0<=Z<=0.3), and (B) the discharge electrodes of the anode 22 and the cathode 23 in a container. The fluorescent substance 25 is excited and made to emit light by ultraviolet light generated through glow discharge produced with a d.c. voltage applied across the anode 22 and cathode 23. |
