PURPOSE:To obtain methanol selectively and in a high conversion by reacting carbon oxide with hydrogen under mild conditions, in the presence of Pd supported on at least one oxide of a metal selected from the groups IIa and IIIa in the long form of the periodic table, as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Pd is supported on at least one oxide, e.g. benyllium or lanthanum oxide, of a metal selected from the groups IIa and IIIa in the long form of the periodic table as a carrier. In the presence of the catalyst, thus obtained a gas comprising carbon oxide (carbon monoxide and/or carbon dioxide) and hydrogen is subjected to contact reaction at 150-250 deg.C and ordinary pressure to 10 atmospheres to give methanol. The molar ratio of carbon oxide to hydrogen is preferably 5:1- 1:5. |
