A vehicle number plate is divided into a fixed portion 1 and a removable portion 2 superposedly mounted in sliding relationship therewith, so that the removal of the removable portion unmasks areas of a colour different from the background colour of the fixed portion. A stolen vehicle can immediately be spotted by the colour contrast. Locking means 19 hinged at 18 may be employed for preventing unauthorized withdrawal of the removable portion and a projecting boss 24 may be employed for hindering the juxtaposition of a forged plate (25) to the genuine one. The removable portion 2 may be controlled electrically or electronically and made to fold up when removed. The area behind the removable portion 2 may have the vehicle number repeated in a different colour. <IMAGE> |
