Granular starch is mixed with a fat solvent e.g. methanol so that the resulting mixture does not contain more than 15% water. The mixture is heated to 255-300 degrees C for no more than 30 minutes, to reduce the content of fat bound to the starch to at most 0.15%. The choice of solvent and condition, such as water content of starch/solvent mixture, temperature and time, are such that the starch granules stiffen rapidly. |
