In a process for neutralizing hot acid gas, the gas prior to being neutralized is introduced 24 into a zone, e.g., one or more cyclones 14, 16 arranged in parallel, to establish an upwardly, generally spiral gas stream for removal from the gas of larger particles which concentrate at the cyclone wall by centrifugal forces. The resulting upwardly- moving cleaned gas stream or streams which may or may not have a spiral motion is contacted with an upwardly- moving spray of a basic neutralizing liquid or slurry e.g. from nozzles 46, 48, under conditions such that the spray droplets moderately overcome gravitational forces such that they experience a sufficiently long residence time in a reaction zone 12 above the nozzle(s) to be evaporated to dryness with resultant cooling and neutralisation of the gas. The product gas from the reaction zone then can be treated further to remove small particles and salt product and for residual acid gas.
|
