Hydroxamic acid derivatives represented by the following general formula: (FORMULA) wherein R represents hydrogen, acyl, (R<s4>s)(R<s5>s)NCO-, (R<s4>s)(R<s5>s)NCS-, or R<s6>sOCO- (wherein R<s4>s and R<s5>s each represent hydrogen or lower alkyl, and R<s6>s represents lower alkyl), R<s1>s represents hydrogen or lower alkyl, R<s2>s and R<s3>s each represent hydrogen, lower alkyl, or phenyl, and X represents -CH<u2>u- or -S-. These are useful as hypotensors. Processes for preparing them are is follows. 1. Where R represents a member other than hydrogen; (FORMULA) 2. Where R represents hydrogen; (FORMULA) [wherein R<s7>s represents lower alkyl, and R<s8>s is the same as R (excluding hydrogen)] ii) Hydrolysis of compounds of formula (I) wherein R represents a member other than hydrogen.
