The invention consists of expansion joints on concrete buildings such as bridges, roads and similar structures and gives a solution for the problem of avoiding cracking in the surface layer 10; 12 above the joint clearance 3 without unacceptable building height in the design. Based on the invention there is between the cover layer and the plates 4 which cover the joint space, a carpet 5, 7, 9 made of rubber, asphalt or something similar. This can consist of one or more layers which connect the building parts on each side of the joint with coating so that variations in the joint's width are transferred to the coating and can be taken up either in that or in secondary joints.
