A fuel injection pump includes a control member which releasably engages a stop connected to a fuel feed regulator. The control member is biassed by a cut-off spring to displace the regulator towards its zero position for stopping the engine. To start the engine, hydraulic fluid from the feed pump displaces the control member against the force of a spring displacing the regulator towards a starting position. The device coupling the control member with the regulator consists of a ball and spring socket. The coupling is disengaged by the movement of the control member to a position beyond the "start" position so that the regulators is free to move in response to a governor.
