In a Waelz process for volatilizing zinc and lead from iron oxide- containing material in which pelletted feed is charged into an inclined rotary kiln together with solid carbonaceous reducing agent, and metallic iron- containing matter is discharged from the lower end of the kiln, some of the solid matter which is discharged from the kiln, and from which metallic iron- containing matter has been separated, being recycled to the kiln, the recycled solid matter is ground to a particle size below 1 mm, and mixed with the feed material before the latter is formed into pellets, which are then dried with oxygen containing gases at a temperature below 300 DEG C. |
