The suction unit of the machine is connected in behind the fluid spray unit in the working direction and has suction nozzles (3) which rotate about a common vertical axis. These suction nozzles (3) are associated with the spray nozzles (2) of the applicator unit which are designed to apply the fluid cleaning agent which consists substantially of water with no or few additives. Dirty areas of carpet can undergo intensive cleaning since the spray-on cleaning fluid is sucked up shortly after it is applied so that it cannot sink down to rest at the bottom. The rotatable suction nozzles allow the machine to operate in both directions. Furthermore the nozzles can be replaced should they become blocked and inoperative.
