The tread is monolithically formed with parts of the risers of the next steps above and below, in step element, made of stone, concrete or artificial stone, for a staircase assembled from prefabricated components. There are two or more vertically offset joint surfaces (7, 8) rising from the abutting face outwards, on the end face of the riser part (6) facing the next step underside above. The lower joint surface, at least, is shaped for fitting against the relatively protruding end face of the riser part (5) concerned. Each underside may be cut-out in a trough shape, with partitioning cross arm stems. This permits improved damp-proofing at the joints.
