A fork on the steering column operates hydraulic control valves, moving them in opposite direction. This puts one side of the steering operating cylinder into connection the high pressure side of a pump, while putting the other side into connection with the low pressure side. Connection of the higher pressure also to a reaction chamber at one end of the control valve provides resistance to the movement which gives 'feel' to the steering, it is held at a limiting value when a needle valve overcomes a spring and cuts the reaction chamber off from the high pressure source, and may also connect it to the low pressure sink. Steering continues against this constant resistance. |
