Methods and intermediates for introducing the two blocking side chains, 2-hydroxy- 3-isopropyl or tert.-butylaminopropyl, into aromatic nuclei containing a phenolic hydroxyl group by condensing a 5-halomethyl-3-isopropyl or 3-tert. -butyl-2-oxazolidinone with an aromatic compound containing a phenolic hydroxy group in the presence of an acid binding agent at 80-150 DEG C then subsquently splitting the oxazolidinone ring using an alkali metal hydroxide or lower alkoxide at a temperature in the range of 100-150 DEG C in an organic solvent.
