The present invention provides an acrylonitrile polymer fiber and a process for the preparation thereof. The acrylonitrile polymer fiber consists essentially of an acrylonitrile copolymer having a number average molecular weight of about 6,000 up to about 15,750 and may be prepared by melt spinning the acrylonitrile polymer as a fusion melt with water followed by a two-stage stretching of the spun extrudate in a steam pressurized solidification zone.
