In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the mixture of dust and incandescent particles are separated by directing them horizontally through an aperture 8 against the wall of a vertically disposed openended tube 7. The incandescent particles fall downwardly into the liquid 10 and the dust passes upwardly into a filter element 9. The liquid 10 may be water containing a wetting agent such as household detergent. In the alternative embodiment shown in Fig. 3, the dust and incandenscent particles are conveyed by the suction device 6' through a conduit 12 and inlet 15 into a vessel 13 containing liquid 14. A baffle 19, which is located between the inlet 15 and an outlet 16 leading to a dust collector 17 and filter elements 18, ensures that incandescent particles cannot pass directly to the filter elements 18.
