1448534 Additions to cast metal CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 14 Aug 1974 [15 July 1974] 35762/74 Heading C7D [Also in Division B3] A method of casting comprises directing a flow of metal through a passage 18 into a mould cavity 14, and simultaneously feeding an additive material in the form of a wire 25 into the passage 18. The metal is poured from a ladle 22 at a rate such as to maintain the surface 23 of the metal in the pouring basin 19 at a constant level. The wire 25 is fed into the passage 18 by pairs of rollers 36 and passes through a heating element 41 and a guide-member 42. The wire feedrate and the temperature to which it is pre-heated may be controlled by a computer responsive to input data such as the melt chemistry, the pouring temperature, and the pouring rate. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), two wire feeding mechanisms are provided which are operable either independently or simultaneously to feed one or two wires into the passage 18. |
