1308154 Hand held labelling apparatus K D HERMANN 24 Feb 1970 [27 Feb 1969 17 April 1969 10 May 1969] 8808/70 Heading B8F In order to permit the use of different widths of label web in a hand-held labelling apparatus, a feed device (for withdrawing the web from a centrally-located reel) is freely accessible from outside the casing of the apparatus to permit the manual alignment of the centre line of the label web with the centre plane of the feed device. As shown in Fig. 1, labels 311 on a backing tape 29 are withdrawn from a reel 33 by a feed device comprising a belt 27 having pins 28 engaging centrally disposed perforations in the tape. The belt 27 passes around wheels 24, 26 and is driven by a ratchet pawl 23 pivoted on a pin 6 carried by levers 7 which are pivoted at 8 to the casing of the apparatus. An actuating lever 3 is pivoted to a hand grip 1 and has a slot engaging the pin 6. The label tape is fed from the reel under a roller 44 and over a press plate 15, which are carried by the levers 7, and thence around the end of the plate 15 to detach the labels and over a roller 34 adjustably mounted in the casing to the drive belt 27. The tape is guided from the apparatus through a duct 38 in the hand grip. The levers 7 carry a roller 17 for pressing the labels on to articles and have arms 18 on which are pivotally mounted cranked levers 19 carrying an inking roll 20 co-operating with a stationary printing mechanism 22. On depressing the actuating lever 3, the levers 7 are pivoted clockwise so that the roll 20 first inks the printing mechanism and then is swung clear so that on completion of the pivotal movement the label resting on the plate 15 is pressed against the mechanism. The pawl 23 moves idly to engage the next pin 25 on the belt wheel 24. On release of the lever 3 a spring 13 pivots the levers 7 anticlockwise and the pawl drives the belt 27 through a step sufficient to detach a label. The reel is mounted by hemispherical members engaging the central recess of the reel, the hemispherical members being resiliently mounted in the casing to accommodate reels of different widths. The casing is open at the bottom to facilitate engagement of the drive pins 28 in the perforations in the tape when inserting a new reel. In a modification, Fig. 3, the tape drive belt is replaced by a sprocket wheel having pins 28 engaging the perforations, a drive pawl 55 engaging the sprocket pins 28 and being mounted on a lever 53 which is pivoted about the sprocket wheel axis and connected to the levers 7 by a pin-and-slot connection. During clockwise movement of the levers 7 prior to inking a label, a tape length of about half a feed step is withdrawn from the reel, the driving sprocket being held stationary during this movement by a resilient detent plate 65. The presser roller 17 is replaced by a comb 61 having resilient teeth 64, and the detached labels are supported on a member 62 carried by the levers 7. In a further modification the web is passed around a rod adjacent the edge of the plate 15 to detach the labels.
