1372323 Sealing of alkaline cells; electrolytic capacitors PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 2 Feb 1972 [5 Feb 1971] 4892/72 Headings H1B and H1M To prevent leakage of alkaline electrolyte at the interface between a metal casing component having a negative potential and a synthetic resin sealing member, the seating member consists of a vulcanized chlorosulphonated polyethylene rubber. This rubber has a positive charge due to the presence of peripheral positive groups in the polymer. The rubber is preferably vulcanized with magnesium oxide. The invention is particularly directed to the sealed metal casing of an Ni-Cd cell but is also applicable to other alkaline electrolyte secondary cells, to alkaline primary cells and to electrolytic capacitors. A Cd-Ni cell shown in the drawing comprises a cup 2 and cover 1 of metal, a sealing ring 4 of the above-mentioned rubber, nickel wire gauge 5, positive electrode 6, separator 7 impregnated with KOH, negative electrode 8 and a contact spring 9. The casing is closed by flanging rim 3 of the cup 2 over the rim of cover 1. |
