PURPOSE:A specific lactic bacterium is cultured under specified conditions to produce glucan that can be used as starting material for artificial serum and carcinostatic agent. CONSTITUTION:Bacillus laevolaticus M-4 (ATCC23549, FERM-544) is cultured in a medium containing 1-10wt/v% of sucrose as the carbon source, nitrogen source and others at 20-40 deg.C and a pH of 4-8 under standing or slight aeration to produce a glucose polymer that is entirely insoluble in water but produces by hydrolysis with a mineral acid a glucose polymer that has a molecular weight of several ten thousands-hundred thousands, being water-soluble and containing mainly 1,6-linkages. The glucose polymer is isolated and purified by usual methods. |
