The sheet material or web material (18) runs continuously through a coating apparatus having a feed device for the reaction mixture. The feed device comprises a carriage (14). The carriage (14) moves, for example on a rail (17), transversely to the run-through direction of the material (18) to and fro over the entire working width of the coating apparatus. At least one distributor (10, 11) for the liquid reaction mixture is mounted on the carriage (14). The coating apparatus has at least one mixing head (8, 9). The mixing heads (8, 9) are supplied with the components of the reaction mixture which react chemically with one another. The mixing heads (8, 9) maintain their stationary position even when the distributors (10, 11) move to and fro together with the carriage (14). The process is especially suitable for coating the backs of carpets of a width up to 5.5 m with a layer of polyurethane foam. The layer can up to 6 mm thick. Up to 40 kg of the reaction mixture can be applied per minute. The speed of the material (18) can be 3 to 6 m per minute. The carriage (14) can have a linear speed of up to 250 m per minute. <IMAGE>
