Socket for round or square pin plugs - has hole for earth pin between two holes for round pins

The plug socket can receive a two-pin round plug or a three-pin square plug. The hole for the earth pin in the second case is positioned in between the two holes for the round pins in the first case and the earth pin hole is offset from the line joining the other two square pin holes. The contacts within the two round pin holes are electrically connected to the contacts within the latter two square pin holes. The line between the two round pin holes and the line between the two outer square pin holes may be coincident or intersect at right angles.
