Process for the preparation of polyene compounds

There are prepared novel antineoplastic polyene compounds of the formula <IMAGE> in which R1 and R2 denote lower alkyl, R3, R4 and R5 represent hydrogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, lower alkenoxy, nitro, amino, lower alkanoylamido or an N-heterocyclic radical, where at least one of the radicals R3 to R5 is other than hydrogen and where, if one of the radicals R3, R4 and R5 denotes lower alkyl, the other two do not denote hydrogen, and R'6 denotes formyl, alkoxymethyl, alkanoyloxymethyl, carboxyl, alkoxycarbonyl, carbamoyl, mono- or di-lower alkylcarbamoyl or N-heterocyclylcarbonyl. The process is based on a Julia reaction of an appropriate aromatic component and an aliphatic component.
