A shaft has a chiselhead on one end, and a retainer at the other end for detachable fixture of the shaft. At the end facing the chisel head (3), the shaft (1) is fitted with a series of radial slits (13-16) evenly distributed over its periphery. A hard metal plate (17-20) is mounted in each of these, pref. by being pressed in. The plates may be hard-soldered to the shaft, and comprises in the slis as a monolithic entity. The other end of the shaft may be pointed.
