The workpieces, more particularly those used in the shoe industry, can be numbered by a stamping machine with a stamping head (5) mounted in the machine frame (1) so that it can be moved towards a stamping table (2) wherein at least two electronic pre-programmable counters are associated with the type wheels (8a, 8b) of the stamping head which can be advanced for the numbering. One counter serves to count each identical stamping process whilst a further counter serves to count the units (number of advancements) stamped with the same features. The type wheels (8a, 8b) can be switched on by a pneumatic cylinder which can be triggered by the counter.
