The thyristor has two zones which are of opposite conduction type. There are two further zones of opposite conduction type, so that a four-layer structure with alternating conduction types is produced between the end electrodes. One of the further zones is controlled by a control signal through a control terminal, causing current flow between the end electrodes. The control terminal (G) applying the control voltage is connected to a, gate (6) separated by a thin insulating layer (5) from a further zone (3).
