The hydraulic steering control for the ship's rudder has one or two hydraulic pumps supplying the servo circuit. The steering motor is linked to the control valve by a security circuit which isolates the motor is there is a leak. The isolation valve ensures that the rudder setting is stabilised and that the ship does not suddenly loose control. The operators can isolate the faulty part of the circuit and steer on the standby system.
