A wet filter for removing dust and/or harmful gases from air, is periodically cleaned by applying onto the filter elements a mixt. of compressed air and water through impulse nozzles, opt. entraining also a sec. air stream. Specifically, the mixt. of compressed air and water may be generated by an expanding compressed air jet which propels water. Used for combining the sepn. of fine dust and the sepn. of toxic gases, such as SO2, HF, NOx etc. in one operation. The method of cleaning the filters makes this possibles without the use of excessive quantities of wash water.
