The batt is made by air laying the fibres, dusting with the hydrocolloidal material, and pressing between heated members. The position of the dense layer within the batt is controlled by the relative temps. of the pressing members. Highly absorbent, fluid retaining strong material is suitable for use in sanitary napkins, surgical dressings, compresses, disposable diapers, etc.
