The pen (10) comprises a holder (12) containing a free ink cartridge (26), a nib (14) which may be removable and to which is attached an ink reservoir. The reservoir comprises an ink buffer unit (16), containing capillary channels connected to a corresponding ink passage in the nib tip (22). In the nib, and above the buffer unit, is a division wall (24), and this also contains a number of capillary buffer channels connected to those of the buffer unit. An injection tube part of the cartridge extends in front of the division wall capillary part, and a vent channel extends out of the holder from the division wall upwards.
