Bands of rubber or synthetic material delimiting flow passages for steam, form an elastic intermediate layer for hot mangle cylinders, from the interior of which the steam is sucked out by a fan. The bands may be of an open-pored foam, permeable by steam, or may have lengthways and transverse running outwardly open grooves which intersect each other. They are glued to the surface of the cylinder. The arrangement is a marked improvement on the use of intermediate bands of metal fitted with spiral springs. These are expensive to produce, and risk being distorted permanently when the laundry items are put through irregularly, rolled up or overlapping each other. Metal hands may also cause embossing contours on the linen.
