SURGICAL FASTENING DEVICE

A surgical fastening device for joining soft body tissues comprises an elongated retainer strip of absorbable material having longitudinally spaced openings and arranged to be positioned on one side of the tissues to be joined and an elongated fastener strip of absorbable material having prongs spaced corresponding to the spacing of the openings. Each prong is insertible through the tissues between the strips and into one of the openings to secure the tissues between the strips. Barbs on the prongs retain them in the openings. An elongated rigid anvil member supports the retainer strip during the tissue joining procedure, and a rigid pusher member is engageable with the fastener strip during the tissue joining procedure whereby relative movement between the anvil and pusher members permits the strips to be moved together into fastening engagement with the tissues.
