<p>This invention provides an apparatus and method for reducing atmospheric pollutants namely, oxides of nitrogen, resulting from the combustion of solid fuels. A multiplicity of primary combustion chambers is supplied with a regulated amount of air for fuel combustion within the range of 50 to 70% of total stoichiometric air to control gas temperatures therein and which discharge into a secondary chamber wherein a regulated amount of air within the range of 50 to 70% of total stoichiometric air is introduced to further control gas temperatures and complete the combustion of the fuel, resulting in a total quantity of combustion air supplied to both primary and secondary furnaces in the range of 105 to 125% of total stoichiometric air. This invention is an advance over prior art in providing a method and apparatus for the combustion of solid fuel under controlled gas temperature and airflow conditions to reduce atmospheric pollution.</p> |
