A liquid medium which contains inactivated ether-sensitive complete virus is introduced into a zonal ultracentrifuge with continuous charging, provided with a density gradient solution which contains a haemolytic surface-active agent. The virions enter the density gradient and are cleaved by the surface-active agent. The fractions with the antigenic subunits are isolated. The preferred product of this process is an influenza virus subunit vaccine which is obtained using a density gradient solution in which the concentration of the surface-active agent is about 1 % vol./vol.
