PURPOSE:The use of a specific noble metal compound as a catalyst gives a methacrylic acid amide and alcohol in high yield. CONSTITUTION:In the production of a methacrylic ester from a methacrylic acid amide and an alcohol or a mixture theeof with a small amount of water, a halide, inorganic or organic acid salt of Y, Pr, Nd, Pm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, or Lu, as dysprosium nitrate, europium chloride, holmium nitrate, is used as a catalyst. Preferably, the evolving ammonia is removed out of the reaction system. The reaction temperature is 100-250 deg.C. The methacrylic acid amide is inexpensively obtained by hydration of methacrylonitrile and further sulfuric acid is unnecessary on the esterification. |
