Tobacco compsns. are claimed contg. the 2,2-dimethyl propane diol acetal of 3-ethoxy-4-hydroxy-benzaldehyde (I). (I) has a reduced vanilla flavour compared to ethyl vanillin, and a chocolate note. It is readily soluble in ethyl alcohol and propylene glycol and is easy to incorporate. In an example, 20 ml. of 5% soln. of (I) in propylene glycol was sprayed onto 1000 g. of pipe tobacco in a rotating drum. After 2 weeks storage, the mixt. on smoking had a sweet mild taste with a chocolate aroma.
