Immiscible liquids contacting process - with rotor producing turbulent dispersions before phases can settle

Continuous contacting process useful e.g. in solvent extraction, passes the liquids in counterflow through a drum with a rotor. The rotor carries elements to produce a turbulent dispersion of one liquid in the other. Prior to their discharge, the liquids are allowed to settle in discrete phases. A stationary drum which can be slightly inclined against the horizontal is sealed by packings around a rotor shaft. Spacers locate intermediate discs which subdivide the drum into chambers. In the central part, buckets are arranged between the tie rods to create a turbulent dispersion. The two end sections, free from buckets allow the phases to settle. The turbulent dispersion maximises the extraction efficiency. The max. rotor speed can be increased without upsetting the rapid settling of the phases.
