In an engine-driven vehicle having an hydraulic braking system incorporating a pedal-operated master cylinder for applying the brakes, it is a problem that the braking system may fail while the vehicle is idle, and this is only discovered the next time the vehicle is used, with potentially dangerous consequences. Thus the vehicle is provided with pressure sensing means (3) for sensing pressure in the braking system, and inhibiting means for rendering the vehicle drive means inoperative when the pressure in the system is below a predetermined value. The inhibiting means may prevent the engine from being started, by isolating one of the services to, or a part of the engine. In one construction it comprises a movable contact preventing the ignition circuit from being completed. Alternatively the inhibiting means may inhibit the vehicle transmission by preventing selection of gears.

|
