The injection of water contg. dissolved air under high pressure, into a tank holding a fluid contg. impurities in suspension, is effected through at least one pipe. This has in its wall one or more openings at the position of each of which, the pipe is enclosed by a sleeve having in its wall one or more outlets. The sleeve can be displaced relatively to the pipe so as to bring about complete or partial over-lapping of the holes in the pipe and those in the sleeves. The air separates into tiny bubbles which adhere to the suspended particles and lift them to the surface where they can be easily removed.
