1434264 Alumina supported Ziegler catalysts SOLVAY & CIE 23 Nov 1973 [24 Nov 1972 6 June 1973] 54466/73 Heading C3P [Also in Division B1] Olefins are polymerized in the presence of (a) an organometallic compound of Groups Ia, IIa, IIb, IIIb, or IVb, and (b) a solid complex of (i) a porous aluminium oxide on which, (ii) a magnesium compound containing oxygen or a magnesium dihalide is deposited, and which has been reacted with, (iii) a transition metal compound of Groups IVa, Va or VIa. The alumina support (i) may be a mixed oxide and may have been subjected to halogenation. The magnesium compounds may be used in admixture with an oxygen-containing organic compound of an element of Groups Ia, IIb, IIIb, IVa, IVb, Va, VIa, VIIa or VIII. The internal porosity of the alumina is greater than 0À3 cm.<SP>3</SP> per gram, and the magnesium compound provides 0À001 mg.-atom of magnesium per square metre of surface area of the alumina. Examples describe the polymerization of ethylene in hexane in the presence of hydrogen and (a) Al(i-C 4 H 9 ) 3 and (b) (i) Al 2 O 3 , spinel Al 2 O 3 .MgO, or an Al 2 O 3 fluorinated with NH 4 F, in all cases activated by heating to 700‹ to 900‹ C., (ii) MgCl 2 .4H 2 O, Mg(OCH 3 ) 2 , MgCl 2 . H 2 O/Ti(OC 4 H 9 ) 4 or Mg(OC 2 H 5 ) 2 /Ti(OC 4 H 9 ) 4 , and (iii) TiCl 4 . |
