Determining the surface profile of charge in blast furnace - by lowering probe into furnace until an electric signal is generated indicating that the probe has reached the charge

The distance between a point on the surface of the charge and a fixed horizontal plane of reference (P) is measured, and this operation is repeated at many points on the surface. A second measurement is then made after a specific time adn a teach point, so that the speed of descent of the charge at each point can be calculated for the charge; and linear interpolation of the data obtd. permits the calculation of the surface profile of the charge at any given moment. The pref. appts consists of a cartridge lowered into the furnace by a cable until a sliding plunger switch makes an electric contact indicating the vertical position of the cartridge and therefore the height of the charge touching the plunger. Optimum operation of the furnace is maintained.
