Fail=safe control for automatic transmission - with inching drive if handbrake not applied

The automatic transmission is fitted with a control which causes the system to idle while stationary, with 'drive' set on the selector. The idling position is only possible if the brake is pressed at the same time, otherwise the transmission control is set in an inching mode to edge the vehicle forwards. The control ensures that the driver has to set the handbrake before leaving the vehicle, as without it the vehicle is not stopped. It prevents a vehicle - being left with the engine running and avoids danger of it being driven off by a child.
