Eliminating radial play, the journal bearing may be used to locate an automobile steering column. It comprises an elastic cylindrical primary sleeve containing a secondary sleeve of relatively thin elastically deformably metal. The secondary sleeve has a non-circular section and provides a smooth bearing surface for the column, the sectional geometry providing alternate circumferential zones giving definate and zero radial column clearances respectively. The primary sleeve may be of elostomere or rubber or of plastic rendered elastic by cavities, recesses or notches, or may fit inside a tert sleeve of definite radial thickness. The secondary sleeve may have a triangular form of which the sides are equal circular segments, may have an opening located at a primary sleeve groove, and may have a synthetic bore coating.
|
