This lifting unit, which is suitable in particular for pallet transport, has a spring-loaded reversing valve (19) which responds if a load-dependent pressure is exceeded and releases the inflow of the hydraulic medium to a larger cross-section (F) of the lifting piston (18) designed as a stepped piston. For the lowering operation, two different lowering speeds are available thanks to a control valve (33) which has two return-flow passages of different cross-sections. To this end, the control valve (33) has inside a valve sleeve (37) a valve cone (45) which can be moved successively via a plunger (38) into four different positions and thus clears different transfer cross-sections. <IMAGE>
