The soot trap is for a combustion engine exhaust. It comprises a cylindrical housing (1) with tangential exhaust entry (4) and a concentric internal axial duct (5) with gas-impermeable wall and open inlet (10) at one end at a distance from one closed end (7) of the housing. A helical guide baffle (6) is arranged in the annular space between housing and duct. The housing is externally heat-insulated (3) whilst its wall is internally covered by a surface filter material (2) e.g. aluminium oxide fibre, steel wool, porous sintered ceramic material, ceramic fibre or the like. The housing end where the gas flow reverses through 180 deg. is pref. heatable.
