The closure for an underground hydrant has central spanner plug. The latter projects through the hydrant cover. The hydrant has a housing and a pipe connector. The hydrant closure valve system is designed so that the hydrant is efficiently sealed even if it is damaged and broken for example due to road works. The housing (1) is made integrally of e.g. grey cast iron. In the lower part of the hydrant is an upper valve (3) and below it a lower valve (4). The upper valve is connected to a vertical actuating rod and guided in a sleeve (2). The lower valve rests on a valve holder (5) at the bottom. A plastics sleeve (2) guides both valves on opening as well as on closing. If the housing is broken and the upper valve is displaced, then the lower valve is still held closed, preventing water leakage.
