An electric storage battery having a metal electrode 20 spaced from the electrode of opposite polarity 21 in its cell by a physical spacer 30 and not by a separator, the spacing being achieved by discrete localized regions of non- conducting resin adhered to one of the electrodes. The spacer is preferably formed of discrete drops having a maximum transverse dimension parallel to the plane of the anode of not more than 10 times their thickness.
