<p>A compsn. comprises a particulate anion exchange resin contg. suspended microcrystalline MgX2. 2Al(OH)3, where X is halide, pref. Cl. The anion exchange resin is pref. a cross-linked copolymer of styrene and divinylbenzene having pendant amine or quat. NH3 gps. The compsn. is prepd. by (a) providing a particulate anion exchange resin contg. suspended hydrous Al2O3 conforming to Al(OH)3, and)(b) reacting the Al(OH)3, with an aq. soln. of MgX2 at >=50 degrees C. for >=1 hr. to form microcrystalline MgX2, 2Al(OH)3 suspended in the resin. The compsn. is useful for selective removal of Mg2+ from salt brines which may contain Li or other competing ions. The resin is activated for use by water washing to elute some of the Mg2+ ions, and is reactivated similarly after use.</p> |
