Cell design for separation of an ionised solution into streams of concentrated acid, concentrated alkali and deionised fluid, containing a bed 22 of mixed anion and cation exchange resin, an anion membrane 21 which forms a partition wall for one side of the mixed resin bed 22, a cation membrane 24 which forms a partition wall for the other side of the mixed resin bed 22, an anion resin bath 20 next to the anion membrane 21, a cation membrane 17, which forms a partition wall for the other side of the anion resin bath 20, an anode 14 at a distance from the anion resin bed 20 and the cation membrane 24, a cation resin bed 26 at the cation membrane 24, which forms a partition wall for the other side of the mixed resin bed 22, an anion membrane 30 which forms a partition wall for the other side of the cation resin bed 26, and a cathode 27 at a distance from the cation resin bed 26 and the anion membrane 30, which forms walls against the cation resin bed 26. In a typical manner, this supplied fluid flows from the primary coolant circuit of a nuclear reactor, which coolant contains ionised boric acid and lithium<-7> hydroxide, into a bed of mixed anion and cation exchange resins. <IMAGE> |
