The head design allows all the conductor components to be fitted after moulding and without any final machining. The assembly uses single piece conductor inserts, the central socket and the ignition lead sockets being identical. The carbon electrode and the central electrode can be fitted simultaneously by machine without human intervention. The head(2) has an orthodox overall shape, the centre electrode having an anti-tracking ring on its inside surface. Each electrode(17, 15) is mounted within an insulating pillar(5, 6) which has an annular ridge(9) and groove (10) on its inner surface. The cup-shaped sockets(11) have matching sprung walls such that they can be snap-fitted. The centre sprung carbon electrode(18) spring(19) bears on the lower face of the central socket.
