Flow control valve with rotatable cylindrical plug - has circumferential groove of varying depth to control flow between central bore in plug and conduit in valve body

The flow control valve has a body(2) with a cylindrical bore(1) which houses a cylindrical plug(3). The plug has a central bore(6) which communicates with a radial hole (10). The radial hole opens into a circumferential groove (11) which extends over an arc of 90 deg. with the depth decreasing to zero. As the plug is rotated the depth of the passageway formed by the groove is varied with a consequent corresponding variation in the flow through the valve. In an alternative design a number of radial holes of different sizes are used instead of a single groove of varying depth, giving discrete flow rates instead of a rate infinite variable between two limits.
